Audiozine writes an in-depth overview of the performance in which he states, “Although firmly grounded in jazz music, Nels Cline Singers utilized a variety of techniques that I associate more closely with various underground rock subgenres.” You can download and listen to the full recording of the set by visiting Audiozine’s blog.

Abigail Washburn, Gruvr and Eventful Tools

For music enthusiasts, there are lots of cool widgets out there, but one that I really liked was Gruvr. It has a feature that allows you to follow your favorite bands. Also, Eventful has a tool that allows users to make “demands” for artists to play in their area, like this one for Abigail Washburn who will be performing at The Paramount Theater in Charlottesville on Friday, June 27th.

LOOK3 — Photographers, Photos, Paramount Theater

Last week, Look3, the Festival of the Photograph, took place on the historic Downtown Mall. Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater was excited to host many talented and legendary artists for the festival, having served as a venue for the event. Overall, Look3 was a huge success that drew in photography enthusiasts, professional photographers, and emerging visionaries.

Several attendees have already begun to discuss the event on various blogs. PodSquadHQ writes, “I’m still a little fried from this year’s activities (in a very good way) but I’m more inspired than I’ve been in years.” Another blogger, lilith, writes “Charlottesville enjoys creative license with its “splendid isolation,” and talent appears to be responsive to, if not appreciative of, its myriad cultural niches.”

Guitar God Nels Cline at The Paramount Theater

The Paramount’s becoming the place in Charlottesville where Wilco members come to play. Jeff Tweedy did an amazing concert here in January 2007. Now Nels Cline, who amps up Wilco’s guitar power, brings his trio The Nels Cline Singers for a show tomorrow night. Make no mistake – there will be no singing involved. Instead, expect everything from shred to serene, rocked out by drummer Scott Amendola, bassist Devin Hoff, and the newly-annointed “Guitar God” himself (so saith Rolling Stone Magazine), Nels Cline.

At $25.50 it’s a steal, and a cool way (literally) to spend what is going to be a hot night in C-ville.

Welcome to The Paramount Theater’s Blog!

Thanks for stopping by … we’re putting on a new online face for Charlottesville’s historic Paramount Theater, and we want you to be part of it. For a while, “Welcome to your Paramount Theater” was a big catchphrase here. This was never truer than with this blog. We want to take you inside the walls and behind the scenes … from backstage to above the stage. We’ll have all sorts of cool info about who’s playing and performing, what’s happening before and after shows, who’s behind the scenes, and how it all comes together.

There will posts written from my blue-green office on the 5th floor (with a nice view of the Wachovia building), but I’m not interested in being the only voice here. Or having just my co-horts here chiming in. We want you to write about the performing arts. To speak about your passions – music, dance, drama. Considering where we sit, that could mean classic film or architecture, or history, too. We hope you’ll make suggestions, review shows on your own blogs, and talk about what you think of your experiences here.
